Pattern Art FAQs

When licensing patterns or collections from my pattern library, you may request minor tweaks or color changes to existing patterns that better fit your brand aesthetic. Note that these requests may require more turnaround time. If major changes are requested, it can incur additional hourly editing fees.

When licensing patterns or collections through the custom pattern route, major changes from the creative meeting/request or that significantly depart from the initial artwork for review may also require additional hourly editing fees.  Major edits include changes to layout, scale, repeat structure, changes to multiple design elements, or overall composition. Minor edits are limited to small, non-structural changes including one or two color adjustments or a minor modification for a single design element that does not affect the overall composition, layout, or repeat of the Artwork and does not require changes to surrounding elements. Two rounds of minor revisions are part of my custom pattern route process.

Can I ask for motif or color changes to a pattern I want to license?

No, I will not copy another artist's work. You may show me a mood board that aligns with your brand that I can then create distinctive patterns in my style, keeping your aesthetic in mind. Brands and small businesses that work with me come to me for art in my distinctive style and point of view. I encourage brands and small businesses to seek licensing opportunities with other artists for work that may better align with a different style.

Can I show you art that I like from somewhere else and have you copy or recreate it?

Brands and small businesses come to me for art in my distinctive style and point of view. So if you request a sunflower, I will create a sunflower in my specific art style that you see demonstrated throughout my website. For some companies, they may need to fulfill a design need in another style, and I welcome them to work with other artists to accomplish those goals. I never expect nor require that you only use me for your art and pattern needs.

Can you create art in different styles?

There are multiple factors that come into play -- the amount of time to agree to mutually beneficial licensing terms, the complexity of the design or edit work, my creative flow, etc.  I always strive to be efficient, but I prioritize the integrity of the pattern result.  Quality art requires time, thoughtfulness, attention to detail, and even just the administration of preparing files can take time. If turnaround time is a top priority, selecting an existing pattern from the pattern library is a good route to take.

Can I ask for motif or color changes to a pattern I want to license?

I'm comfortable delivering files in any form required.  I have made patterns in both vector and raster forms, though I mostly produce raster patterns now, as I like the resulting textures and details.  I'm often asked for my repeat tile file in 300 dpi high res PNG or JPEG files, or I have also prepared files using the dimensions of the final product and delivered in PDF form.  Once the final file is delivered to you, you then can work with your manufacturer to produce your end products within the parameters of the licensing agreement.

What file types can you produce?

I hand draw and paint every part of my surface pattern designs.  Imagine you are drawing and painting on a piece of paper, but instead, my pencil / paint brush is an Apple pencil, and my paper is my iPad.  This is different than Artificial Intelligence designs or using clip art to assemble patterns.  I never generate art with artificial intelligence, and I never use clip art or other motifs created by someone else.  Every element is something dreamed in my head, planned out, and drawn / painted using my own hand into my iPad programs.  My designs can range from simple to complex with intricate details.  The color palettes are often soft and muted, but can also be rich, moody, or bright depending on the seasonal theme.

Licensing FAQs

Once the licensing period is over, your company's rights to produce new or existing products using the artwork will conclude unless the agreement is renewed or extended. Depending on the terms of the contract, there may also be a sell-off period allowing remaining inventory to be sold through after the expiration date.

At the end of the term, the artwork returns fully to me and may later appear in future collections, new collaborations, or additional licensing opportunities.

Licensing offers you access to original, professionally developed artwork without the investment of purchasing full ownership of the design. It also allows for greater flexibility, as licensing terms can be customized based on product category, exclusivity, territory, timeline, and intended usage.

For large brands and small businesses especially, licensing can be an ideal way to create a beautifully cohesive collection with distinctive artwork while keeping the process more scalable and collaborative.  It also gives more flexibility to adapt to ever-evolving styles and trends.

What are the benefits of licensing a pattern versus buying a pattern to use?

What are the benefits of licensing a pattern versus buying a pattern to use?

Surface pattern design licensing is when a company or small business purchases the rights to use an artist's artwork on products for a specific period of time while the artist retains ownership of the original artwork and copywrite. Rather than purchasing the artwork outright, licensing allows brands to use distinctive artwork in a way that is tailored to their needs -- whether that be for textiles, wallpaper, stationery, home decor, packaging, or other products.

Whether you are creating wallpaper, handmade goods, textiles, stationery, home decor, or gift products, licensing allows your brand to bring thoughtfully curated artwork into your product line while maintaining flexibility through customized licensing terms.

An exclusive license means the artwork is reserved solely for your business within the agreed scope of the contract. This exclusivity may apply to a particular product category, territory, or market segment depending on the terms negotiated. Exclusive licensing is often ideal for brands seeking a more signature, proprietary collection feel.

A non-exclusive license allows the artwork to be licensed across multiple businesses, provided the usage does not overlap in a conflicting way. This option offers greater flexibility and is often a more accessible approach for small businesses.

Licenses can be thoughtfully customized in a variety of ways, including:
  • Product category usage
  • Geographic territory
  • Licensing term length
  • Retail or distribution channels
  • Exclusivity scope
  • Production quantities
  • Renewal options
  • Sell-off periods
  • Royalty structures, advances, and flat-fee arrangements

Can you explain the different types of licensing terms (exclusive vs. non-exclusive) and what other parameters can be placed on a license?

Can you explain the different types of licensing terms (exclusive vs. non-exclusive) and what other parameters can be placed on a license?

Exclusive licenses are typically priced higher because the artwork is reserved solely for your business within the agreed scope of use. Pricing is influenced by factors such as exclusivity level, product categories, production volume, territory, the size and visibility of the licensee, and licensing duration.

Non-exclusive licenses are generally more flexible in cost, making them an excellent option for brands seeking elevated artwork while working within a broader range of budgets.

Because every business and collection is unique, licensing fees are quoted individually based on the scope and intended usage of the artwork.

We can definitely discuss that option, provided that any selected artwork from the pattern library is not under active licensing agreements. For large companies with larger profit margins, this is often a feasible option.  For smaller businesses, licensing is often a better route.  Please submit a request for a video conference on my contact page, so we can set up a time to discuss.
